Papaya's Healthful Benefits

Papaya is not only a favored fruit by most Filipinos, but is actually a healthful one. In fact, it contains antioxidants and nutrients such as carotenes, vitamin B, vitamin C, flavonoids, folate, panthothenic acid, minerals, potasium, magnesium and fiber. Put together, these nutrients help keep the cardiovascular system healthy. Also, it may have beneficial effects versus colon cancer as well. Of course, papaya is also known for aiding the digestion. Indeed, it's a much better and natural way of promoting bowl movement.

Here are just some of papaya's healthful benefits:

For cancer protection.
Papaya is known for protecting the body against colon cancer. The fiber in the fruit is particularly helpful in carrying toxins out of the body. The three major antioxidants in papaya (vitamins C and E; and beta-carotene) also help in reducing the risk of colon cancer.

For heat disease.
Studies have shown that papaya is helpful in preventing atherosclerosis and heart disease (the latter, especially for diabetics). The reason? It is rich in vitamin C, vitamin E and beta-carotene. These three have been proven to be very powerful antioxidants. Papaya is also rich in fiber, and as such helps lower cholesterol levels.

For anti-inflammatory effects.
Is papaya good for arthritis? Studies seem to indicate so. The enzymes found in it like papain and chymopapain seem to have a beneficial effect in helping lower inflammation (as well as heal burns). People afflicted with astma, osteorthritis and rheumatoid arthritis were observed to be of improve condition as soon as they increased their papaya consumption.

For immune support.
A healthy immune system seems to be one of the benefits of increased papaya consumption. As such, people who frequently experience having colds, flu and other infections will do well if they make this fruit a part of their daily diet. The reason why of course, is the fact that papaya has three powerful antioxidants.

For good eyesight.
Being rich in beta-carotene (like carrots), papaya is good for the eyes. Consuming papaya may also reduce the risk of vision loss for adults. This is good news for diabetics who are at great risk of losing their eyesight.

So eat papaya! It's a healthful fruit.
