Summer Garden Tips

The summer season presents challenges to the gardener. This need not be. There are a lot of things a gardener can do during the dry months that will ensure a healthy garden (be it vegetable or ornamental). Here are a few tips:

  • If you are not sure of maintaining a vegetable garden during the summer months, then plant herbs. Some herbs are hardy and most of them will grow well during the warm months. On the plus side, the scent of fresh herbs can make a refreshing garden during this period-just in time for outdoor dining and entertaining.

  • Taking a trip? Be sure to leave someone in charge of your plants. Either you hire a gardener, or ask a friendly neighbor to take care of your garden for you. If such is the case, be sure to leave gardening implements where these can be seen and used.

  • Regarding water usage, summer is particularly difficult for watering as water restrictions might be imposed during the duration of the warm months. Mulch is a good and very effective way of keeping water for a plant's use. There a a lot of materials that can be turned into mulch. These include: grass cuttings, wood chips, brown cardboard etc.

  • Make sure of the warm months and move some indoor plants, outdoors. That way, they can soak up much needed sunlight. Be sure to prune them a little though and spray them with water at least before placing them outdoors and before moving them back in. spraying with water will dislodge bugs and remove dust.

  • What about hanging plants? Plants planted in hanging containers and baskets need special attention during summer as their soil dries up easily. Water them thoroughly, allowing water to run through the drainage holes.

  • As a general rule during the simmer months, it is best to water plants early in the morning or at dusk. That way, you can conserve water.
