Kitchen design is in flux. Among the characteristics that Asian kitchens will have in the future include.

Integrated design. Asian kitchens are expected to redefine themselves away from their box-like confines and are expected to become places of interaction for family, guests and friends. Moreover, they are expected to be the center of domestic life. Such a characteristic calls for an open-plan design and systems that will limit indoor pollution, noise and smoke.

Clean, simple lines. Asian kitchens of the future are expected to have horizontal lines that will reinforce a stream-lined look that echoes sleek and sophisticated finishes. Gone are the days when baroque trimmings (especially popular among Philippines kitchens) rule. Instead, kitchen design will echo the minimal look and straight lines of kitchen appliances.

Increased use of technology and time-saving devices. Future Asian kitchens will probably feature and increase use of technological devices and time-savers. Think the Jetsons, but in a more practical and functional manner. In fact, increased function will be one of the features of kitchens of the future, with appliances possibly combining television viewing, home computing and videophone attributes.

It's easy being "green". The kitchen of the future will undoubtedly be environment-friendly. As such, the kitchen in general will probably be more energy efficient and will no doubt adhere to stricter environmental standards. The kitchen itself (shelves, drawers etc.) will probably be built with environmentally safe materials. The kitchen "users" will also be more eco-friendly as the choices they will be making-with regards to appliances and materials-will call for more sophistication with regards to choosing.

Let there be light. Believe it or not, Asian kitchens of the future are expected to be brighter vis-à-vis illumination. In particular, white light is expected to be the norm as it conforms to the lighting needs of Asian kitchens of the future. Illumination, however, will not be just practical and functional, as it is expected to affect mood as well. Thus, future lighting will enable the kitchen environment to become cozy and warm or otherwise, depending on the needs of the homeowner.
