½ cup butter or margarine, softened
½ cup brown sugar
½ cup molasses
3-½ cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. ginger powder
½ tsp. cloves
½ cup water
Cream butter and sugar. Beat in molasses. Blend all dry ingredients.
Add to the butter and sugar mixture, alternately with water. The dough will become stiff so that the last dry addition may need to to blended by hand. Work on it until it is smooth in consistency.
When dough is easy to work, it's ready to be rolled-out to make the gingerbread pieces. Bake at 350ºF. When done, construct the gingerbread house according to preferred design.
